Ephesus is one of the best-known ancient sites in Turkey, and when you go makes a big difference to how much you enjoy it. The site is large, open to the sky and paved with marble, so heat, sun and crowds all shape your day. Here is our practical advice on choosing the season, the time of day and what to bring.

The short answer

The most comfortable times are usually spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October). Start early in the morning, on a day when fewer cruise ships are in port.

You can visit Ephesus at any time of year. With a little planning, a summer or winter visit can work well too.

Ephesus season by season

Spring (April–May): fresh, green and comfortable

Spring is one of the most pleasant times to walk through the ancient city. The weather is usually mild, the hillsides around the site are green and wildflowers often grow between the ruins. Walking the full route is far more comfortable than in midsummer.

April can still bring cool mornings and the occasional shower, so a light layer is useful. By May the days become warmer and visitor numbers start to rise. Easter and holiday weeks can be busy.

Summer: very hot, with little shade

Summer is the peak travel season along the Aegean coast. It is also the most demanding time to visit Ephesus.

Days are very hot, and the site offers very little shade. The white marble streets reflect the sunlight, so it can feel even hotter than it is.

A summer visit is still very possible if you prepare. The key is to:

  • Start as early as you can
  • Carry plenty of water
  • Cover up from the sun
  • Take your time and rest where you find shade

People who do not handle heat well, young children and older travellers should take extra care in the middle of the day.

Autumn (September–October): warm sea, gentler sun

In September the middle of the day can still feel hot, so the early-start advice still applies. The sea is still warm enough to swim when you get back to Kusadasi.

By October the intense summer heat has eased and the light is softer. The days become cooler and more comfortable for walking.

Winter: quieter, but check the weather

Winter is the quietest season at Ephesus. If you want space to photograph the Library of Celsus without crowds, this can be a rewarding time to go. Temperatures are generally mild compared with northern Europe.

However, winter can be rainy, and wet marble becomes slippery. Wear shoes with good grip, bring a waterproof layer and keep an eye on the forecast.

On a wet day, an indoor stop such as the Ephesus Museum in Selçuk fits in well.

Best time of day to visit

Early morning

Arriving early in the morning is our top recommendation in almost every season. The air is cooler and the light is good for photographs.

The site also tends to be calmer early on. Cruise excursion groups add to visitor numbers on busy port days, so an early start gives you a quieter beginning to your walk.

Late afternoon

A late-afternoon visit can also work well, especially in summer. The sun is lower, some of the day’s crowds have left and the stone takes on a warm colour.

If you plan to go later in the day, check the official museum website first. Leave enough time to walk the whole site comfortably.

Midday

Midday is usually the hottest and often the busiest part of the day. If midday is your only option, slow down, drink regularly and use whatever shade you can find.

Cruise-ship days and crowds

Kusadasi is a popular cruise port, and Ephesus is the main excursion for most ship passengers. On days when several large ships are in port, the site becomes noticeably busier, especially along Curetes Street and around the Library of Celsus.

If your dates are flexible, check our Kusadasi cruise ship schedule to see which ships are in port. Then choose a quieter day, or plan an early start on a busy one.

If you are a cruise passenger, your date is fixed, so timing within the day matters most. A simple rule applies here. If your all-aboard time leaves you less than about six hours ashore, keep to Ephesus only.

Our cruise day planner and our guide on how to get from Kusadasi cruise port to Ephesus explain how to make the most of your hours ashore.

Walking the site: why direction matters

The main route runs about 1.5 km between the Upper Gate and the Lower Gate. It slopes downhill, so walking from the Upper Gate down is much easier, particularly in the heat. Our driver drops you at the Upper Gate and waits for you at the Lower Gate. Our Ephesus walking guide explains what you will see along the way.

What to wear and bring

Whatever the season, a few simple items make your visit more comfortable:

  • Comfortable shoes with good grip. The ancient marble is uneven and can be slippery, especially when wet. Avoid flip-flops.
  • Sun protection. Bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen from spring to autumn.
  • Water. Bring a bottle and refill it when you can, especially in summer.
  • Light, breathable clothing. Loose clothes that cover your skin help in the sun.
  • Cover for holy sites. Cover your shoulders and knees if you plan to visit the House of the Virgin Mary or a mosque.
  • A light layer or rain jacket. These are useful on cool spring mornings and for winter showers.
  • A small bag. Keep your hands free for photos and for steadying yourself on uneven steps.

Adding other stops to your day

Our packages include Ephesus only, Ephesus with the House of the Virgin Mary, or Ephesus with the House of the Virgin Mary and the village of Şirince. The full-day route runs in this order:

  1. Pick-up in Kusadasi.
  2. House of the Virgin Mary, about 30–60 minutes.
  3. Ephesus Upper Gate, then walk down through the ancient city, 2–3 hours at an easy pace.
  4. Meet your driver at the Lower Gate.
  5. Şirince, about 1–1.5 hours (if it is in your package).
  6. Return to Kusadasi.

With every Ephesus package you can also add optional free stops in Selçuk. Selçuk lies on the way to Şirince and on the way back towards Kusadasi. A suggested order is:

  1. Temple of Artemis, about 15–20 minutes
  2. Ephesus Museum, about 1 hour
  3. İsa Bey Mosque, about 15–20 minutes
  4. Basilica of St. John, about 30–45 minutes

The Ephesus Museum is a good choice on a very hot or rainy day. If you would rather spread the sites over more than one day, see our guide to Kusadasi in 1, 2 or 3 days.
