Celestyal Discovery in Kusadasi: a short morning in Ephesus by car

Celestyal Discovery calls in Kusadasi on Tuesdays and Saturdays, often only until midday. How to fit Ephesus into a short morning with a private car.

Celestyal Discovery is one of the most regular visitors to Kusadasi, but its days here are short. The published schedule (checked in October 2026) shows 78 calls between October 2026 and October 2027, every one of them on a Tuesday or a Saturday. Where times are announced, the ship arrives early in the morning and leaves around midday.

What a Celestyal Discovery morning looks like

Of the 78 calls, 16 currently have published times:

  • 10 calls from 07:00 to 12:00
  • 5 calls from 07:00 to 13:00
  • 1 call from 08:00 to 15:00

For the remaining calls, arrival and departure times have not been announced yet. If the pattern holds, expect a stay of roughly five to six hours. Always check the ship’s daily programme for the all-aboard time, which is usually earlier than the departure time.

The ship is rarely alone. On 47 of its days in port at least one other ship is alongside, and on 21 days there are three or more ships in Kusadasi. Saturday 17 October 2026 is a good example: four ships in port on the same morning. Compare that with Tuesday 6 October 2026, when the schedule shows no other ship at all.

Be realistic: Ephesus first, and probably only Ephesus

With five hours in port, the honest plan is Ephesus on its own. Door to door, a visit to the ancient city takes roughly 3.5 hours, and our rule is to be back at the port at least 60 minutes before the published departure. That leaves little room.

  • 07:00 to 12:00: Ephesus only. Skip the extras.
  • 07:00 to 13:00: Ephesus plus a short photo stop at the Temple of Artemis, if you get off the ship quickly.
  • 08:00 to 15:00: Ephesus, then either the House of the Virgin Mary or the Temple of Artemis, not both.

Sirince does not fit into any of these windows. Do not try to squeeze it in.

A sample morning (07:00 to 12:00 window)

These clock times are approximate and assume a smooth exit from the port:

  1. About 07:30: meet your driver at the cruise port exit.
  2. About 08:00: drop-off at the upper (south) gate of Ephesus, so you walk mostly downhill.
  3. 08:00 to 10:15: Curetes Street, the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre.
  4. About 10:15: your driver collects you at the lower (north) gate.
  5. About 10:45: back at the port, comfortably more than 60 minutes before a 12:00 departure.

Ask for the gate-to-gate drop-off when you book. On a 13:00 day, the extra hour can go to the Terrace Houses inside the site or to the Temple of Artemis, but not to both.

The places, seen from a short call

Ephesus. The marble street runs downhill past the Temple of Hadrian to the Library of Celsus and on to the Great Theatre. On a five-hour day this is the whole point of going ashore.

Temple of Artemis. Once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, today a single re-erected column in a low field on the edge of Selcuk. Fifteen minutes is enough, and only on a 13:00 day.

House of the Virgin Mary. A small stone house in the woods above Ephesus, visited by three popes. It needs a winding drive up the mountain and about 45 minutes on site, so it only works on the rare longer call.

Sirince. A hillside village of fruit wines and stone houses. Keep it for another trip.

Timing tips for this ship’s pattern

Because the calls start early, you can reach Ephesus close to the start of the day, before the heat builds. That matters: 27 of the calls fall in June, July and August, when midday is often well above 30 °C and the site has very little shade. Bring water, a hat and shoes with grip, since the marble can be slippery.

On the 21 busy days, many groups head to Ephesus at a similar time. You cannot shift a five-hour visit much, so the best lever is getting off the ship early and keeping the plan simple. The calls in January and March bring cooler air and possible rain; entrance tickets are not included, so buy Ephesus and Terrace Houses tickets in advance on our museum tickets page.
