MSC Explora 2 rarely has Kusadasi to itself. The published schedule (checked in October 2026) lists seven calls between 9 April and 11 September 2027, and on six of them at least two other cruise ships are in port too. The only quiet date is the first one, Friday 9 April, a spring call with no other ship listed. Arrival and departure times have not been announced yet.
That makes this ship a good case for one simple idea: with a private car, you do not have to visit the sites in the same order as everyone else.
Four summer Wednesdays with Odyssey of the Seas
The heart of the series is four Wednesdays: 9 June, 30 June, 21 July and 11 August. Odyssey of the Seas is listed on all four, joined on different days by Explorer of the Seas, Enchanted Princess, SeaDream II or Silver Nova. The two Saturdays, 15 May and 11 September, are just as full, with Celestyal Discovery among the neighbours both times.
When several ships arrive together, many groups head to Ephesus at roughly the same hour in the morning. You will meet them at the gates, on Curetes Street and in front of the Library of Celsus. A tour coach has to follow its timetable; a car with your own driver can go elsewhere first.
Choosing stops by length of stay
Once your times appear in the ship’s daily programme, use the window from arrival to departure. Every option keeps at least 60 minutes in reserve before departure, and the all-aboard time comes earlier still.
- Under 6 hours: Ephesus is the visit, with the Temple of Artemis only if you are moving quickly. Reordering helps little on a call this short; just go early.
- 7 to 8.5 hours: Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary and the Temple of Artemis. Leave Sirince out.
- About 10 hours: room for all four, and room to play with the order.
A reversed route for a crowded day (hypothetical times: 08:00 to 18:00)
These clock times are an example, not the ship’s schedule. The idea is to spend the busy morning at the smaller sites and reach Ephesus once the first wave of groups is leaving.
- 08:30 Leave the cruise port exit.
- 09:10 to 10:30 Sirince, while the lanes are still calm. Midday tends to be its busiest time.
- 10:50 to 11:10 Temple of Artemis on the edge of Selcuk.
- 11:40 to 12:25 House of the Virgin Mary.
- 12:45 to 15:00 Ephesus, upper gate down to the lower gate.
- 15:35 Back at the port, more than two hours before an 18:00 departure.
Be honest with yourself about the trade-off. On a July or August Wednesday, this route puts you on the open marble of Ephesus in the hottest hours. If heat bothers you more than crowds do, keep Ephesus first and accept company.
Short notes on the four places
Ephesus. One of the great Roman cities of the Mediterranean, on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2015. The Terrace Houses, under a protective roof inside the site, show Roman wall paintings and mosaics and need their own ticket.
House of the Virgin Mary. A small house on Nightingale Mountain where, by tradition, Mary spent her last years. The short path from the car park makes it one of the easier stops for anyone who walks slowly.
Temple of Artemis. Expect one column in a low field, not a temple. It is still worth a few minutes for its place in history.
Sirince. Old stone and timber houses on a hillside above Selcuk, known for fruit wines, olive oil and soaps. The cobbles are steep, so wear proper shoes.
The April call and the summer calls
The 9 April visit is the odd one out: no other ships listed and spring weather, which usually means milder walking. Tickets aren’t included; book Ephesus and Terrace Houses tickets ahead on our museum tickets page. The four calls in June, July and August are the opposite: hot, bright and busy. A hat, water and sun cream are not optional on those days.
Arranging the car
Book through the Kusadasi–Ephesus private transfer page. Your driver meets you at the cruise port exit, waits throughout and brings you back to the ship. One vehicle takes up to 8 passengers. Tell us your extra stops and the order you prefer when you book, and we confirm the plan with you before the day. Entrance tickets are separate. You can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before.

Plan it with the current schedule
Good to know: the Kusadasi–Ephesus private transfer covers Ephesus. Stops at the House of the Virgin Mary, the Temple of Artemis and Sirince are not included and cost extra; tell us which ones you want when you book and we will confirm the plan and the cost.
