Viking Jupiter Ephesus day: three Kusadasi calls, three seasons

Viking Jupiter stops in Kusadasi only three times: October, April and August. Plan Ephesus and nearby sights by private car for each of those days.

If you are sailing on Viking Jupiter, your Kusadasi day is a rare one. The published schedule (checked in October 2026) lists just three calls in the next twelve months, and each lands in a different season: Friday 30 October 2026, Friday 30 April 2027 and Monday 16 August 2027. Arrival and departure times have not been announced yet for any of them.

So instead of one plan, think of three. The ruins are the same; the heat, the crowds and the pace are not.

Which Viking Jupiter call are you on?

Friday 30 October 2026: the busy one

Two other ships share the port that day, Enchanted Princess and Seven Seas Grandeur. With three ships in, many groups set off for Ephesus at about the same time in the morning. This is the day to use the flexibility of a private car: visit the House of the Virgin Mary first and walk Ephesus later, once the first rush thins out. Late October is usually mild, which helps.

Friday 30 April 2027: spring with one neighbour

Star Legend is in port too, so expect some company but not a crush. Spring is milder than high summer, so this is the call where a longer walk, Terrace Houses included, feels least like hard work.

Monday 16 August 2027: alone, but hot

Viking Jupiter is the only ship listed that day, so crowds from other ships are not the issue. Heat is. In August, midday at Ephesus is often well above 30 °C and there is very little shade. Start as early as your ship allows and keep the open-air ruins for the cooler first hours.

Ephesus shore excursion by private car: what fits

Until times are published, work with the length of the stay:

  • About 5 hours in port: Ephesus only, perhaps with a quick photo stop at the Temple of Artemis on the way back. Nothing more.
  • About 7 hours: Ephesus plus one of the two nearby extras, the House of the Virgin Mary or the Temple of Artemis. Sirince does not fit.
  • About 9 hours or more: Ephesus, Mary’s House, the Temple of Artemis and Sirince together become realistic.

Count backwards from the departure time once it is published: you want to step out of the car at the port an hour or more before it. Jupiter’s all-aboard time is likely to be earlier, so read the daily programme.

Example: an early August start (hypothetical 07:00 to 14:00)

These hours are invented for illustration, not announced:

Time (approx.) What you do
07:30 Meet the driver at the cruise port exit
08:00 Ephesus, upper gate, walking downhill while it is cooler
10:15 Car collects you at the lower gate; drive up the mountain
10:35 House of the Virgin Mary, about 45 minutes in the shade
11:20 Drive back down and on to the port
about 12:30 Back at the port, comfortably more than 60 minutes before 14:00

The Terrace Houses (roughly 45 to 60 minutes) would also fit, but then nothing else.

Notes on the four places for this ship

Ephesus. Ruins of one of the great Roman cities of the Mediterranean, beside Selcuk. The Temple of Hadrian and the Odeon sit along the way down to the Library of Celsus. Starting at the upper gate keeps you walking mostly downhill.

House of the Virgin Mary. Higher up and under trees, so it often feels cooler than the ruins, which is exactly why it suits the August call.

Temple of Artemis. Once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; today one re-erected column in a field that is often marshy. It is a short stop, roughly 15 to 20 minutes.

Sirince. Worth it only on a long call. Narrow, steep, cobbled lanes, the restored Church of St John the Baptist and shops selling fruit wine, olive oil and soap. Around midday it can get busy.

Walking and comfort

The main route at Ephesus is roughly 1.5 to 2 km on uneven marble and stone. Wear proper shoes on all three dates, carry water, and on the August call add a hat and sun cream. If someone in your group has limited mobility, tell us when booking; the House of the Virgin Mary has only a short path from the car park.

Reserving the car

The Kusadasi–Ephesus private transfer is a private car with driver, just for your group of up to 8 passengers. Your driver meets you at the cruise port exit, waits during each visit and drives you back to the ship. Let us know your extra stops when you book, and we confirm the plan with you before the day. Entrance tickets are not included. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before, and you can pay by cash or card.

Tickets are not included; buy Ephesus and Terrace Houses tickets in advance on our museum tickets page. Planning the visit? See our Ephesus walking guide and when to visit Ephesus.

Plan it with the current schedule

Good to know: the Kusadasi–Ephesus private transfer covers Ephesus. Stops at the House of the Virgin Mary, the Temple of Artemis and Sirince are not included and cost extra; tell us which ones you want when you book and we will confirm the plan and the cost.

The ship times in this guide are as published in October 2026 and can change. The ship pages are updated every morning.
